Sequential pairs of choices

Hi Michiel,

I'm in the process of designing a stated choice scenario that involves 2 choice options at a point in time, followed by a further 2 choice options later in the day.

All the options have the same attributes and attribute levels. In some cases respondents will have to choose one of the initial 2 choices, in other cases they can choose from across the 4, so the pairs of choice options are not independent.

I'd like to ensure attribute level balance and to avoid dominated choices across all 4 options, but also within each pair. Do you have any tips on a good way to do this?

A design with 4 choice options without dominant alternatives means that each pair of options will also have no dominant alternatives. Similarly, a level balanced design with 4 choice options will also be level balanced for each pair of options. So it would be best to generate a design with all four choice options simultaneously.
